What is Circle Singing?

Circle Singing is community-created improvisational vocal music. Some people describe it as a “drum circle for singers.” It is both a contemporary and ancestral practice of making music together in the moment, using only our voices and bodies as instruments.

Through call-and-response, vocal and body percussion, syncopated rhythms, invented languages, melodies, harmonies, playful sounds, and spontaneous vocal expression, participants co-create music in real time. Circle Singing invites singers to explore, listen, respond, and discover what can happen when music is made collaboratively and without judgment.

In collaboration with Improv NM, facilitator  Kathryn (Katy) Holtkamp will lead an introductory exploration of Circle Singing this spring.

Katy is a New Mexico native and New York–trained professional singer and actress who has performed and trained in multiple musical genres around the world. She is currently performing on tour with Cirque du Soleil’s KOOZA and is offering this workshop to her home community during a break between touring cities.

Having experienced firsthand how improvisational play can free the voice and allow music to emerge more effortlessly, Katy is passionate about creating spaces where singers can discover what their voices are truly capable of.

This workshop will guide participants through musical games and exercises, improvisational forms, and vocal experimentation to co-create a supportive musical environment where every voice is welcome and valued.

(8 weeks + Student Spotlight)

TUESDAYS

Learn the cornerstones of longform improv: grounded, authentic two-person scenes that exist inside of an emotionally-sound base reality. In this course, students will learn how to find the who, what, and where of a scene (a base reality) and sustain authentic relationships to characters and environment. In short, students will learn how to make things true and play them real.

Pulling Premise

(8 weeks + Student Spotlight)

THURSDAYS
630pm – 830pm

April 30 – June 18

This class focuses on using tools like monologues to craft premise-driven scenes — the building blocks of a solid longform set. You’ll strengthen your skills in starting scenes with clear ideas that set the tone, while reinforcing the essentials of building a grounded setup (aka a base reality with a where, who, what) and honest authentic emotional responses. We’ll practice revisiting and expanding scenes with multiple beats by exploring and heightening.

The Game of the Scene

(8 weeks + Student Spotlight)

WEDNESDAYS

630pm – 830pm

April 29 – June 17

In this class, students will learn how to spot the unusual thing in a scene, communicate it to fellow improvisers in real time, and then revisit it in multiple beats within a base reality (where, who, what). Students will learn how to frame and justify, explore and heighten. This ensemble will learn advanced edits and scene mapping to create a compelling longform set. This class is the next step from improvising just a series of seemingly unrelated scenes into a cohesive and fulfilling longform set worthy of an audience.
